This is a new trip to the area around Veracruz where we visit El Tajin, one of Mexico’s largest archeological sites.
We fly into Veracruz and drive to the town of Xalapa, a small town in the highlands with a thriving cultural scene, which is also the capitol of the state of Veracruz. Our Welcome Dinner is going to be a special treat.
During our 4 day stay, we visit some of the incredible museums including one with Mexico’s second finest archeological collection. This includes a group of the amazing monolithic Olmec heads.
We enjoy some of the many stunning parks. A visit to a coffee finca for a tour and tasting and lunch. This small town is a treat!
After our stay in Xalapa, we drive to the nearby town for our highlight – El Tajin!
It is a massive and stunning site, relatively undisturbed, with 17 ball courts and numerous temples set among green rolling hills. The site is unique for its sculptures and details. And if we are lucky, we will see the Voladores (on a high pole) perform.
Blissfully off the tourist track, you can enjoy everything without crowds, bring your walking shoes.
We spend the night in a nearby hotel and the next day we leave for our return to Veracruz. The following day we leave for our return to Veracruz. While enroute, a visit to a vanilla finca is included.
We finish our journey with an overnight stay in a beautiful hotel in Veracruz right on the city square. A visit to a 15th century fort and a chance to see Danzon dancers in the park are included.
Here we gather for our Closing Dinner and toast the wonders we have seen.
