Dates: JANUARY 16-21, 2018 | Details: 6 days/5 nights
Although Morelia is known as the gateway to the Monarch’s winter home, it is a glorious city and one not to be missed. The Colonial Center made of pink cantera stone, has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Its cathedral is not just gorgeous, it is inspirational!
The city is lined with stunning 16th and 17th century buildings many with baroque facades. Today Morelia it is a bustling city with a popular university, many museums, a magnificent and much revered historic library and many sidewalk cafes.
We enjoy our stay from our base in a boutique hotel with a stunning view of the cathedral and the park below. From the terrace above we toast to the city and savor a delicious dinner.
We have a day exploring the city with our guide, including a lunch downtown.
The following day we head to visit the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary. For those who chose to go, our guide takes us uphill to the winter home of the Monarchs. Millions of butterflies cover the trees and carpet the ground and flutter about landing on every surface. It is a hike to the top, where the butterfly’s stay, but it is worth the effort to be there!
On our 4th day we change direction and head to Lake Patzcuaro. This is a small town on the lake, where history is evident with tiled roofs, and cobblestone streets and the local Purapechas. We are conveniently based to explore the lake and the Purepecha craft villages which line the shores. Each village on the lake makes a unique craft; pottery, masks, guitars, copper vessels and jewelry. There is also a visit to a fascinating archeological site.
Comfortable in our charming hotel after our day of explorations we enjoy a lovely Farewell Dinner.

Level 1– Easy
Level 11– Moderate
Level 111– difficult.
Level 1–The city is at 6,300 ft. The walks are on even pavement and none are far. There is an elevator in the hotel in Morelia, not in Patzcuaro.
Level 111–The hike to the Monarchs is uphill– walking for around an hour-to an hour and a half. There are steps but they are not even. The elevation changes from 6300 ft to near 10,000 ft. The elevation is difficult. There are some rest stops along the way and one can take your time but know that it is not an easy walk. Those who do not want to join can ride along and enjoy the trip, or stay in Morelia and enjoy the day there.
